Walter J. Pojasek, 86, Of New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. - Walter J. Pojasek of New Canaan, formerly of Ipswich, Mass., died Sunday, Nov. 23. He was 86.

Pojasek was born Jan. 25, 1928, in Ipswich, Mass., where he lived most of his life until moving to New Canaan with his wife, Dorothy, in 2009. He worked as a chemist at General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y. He was educated in Ipswich, Mass., attended Northeastern University and graduated from Franklin Technical Institute in 1960 with an engineering degree in chemical technology.

In 1959, he and Dorothy settled in Ipswich where they raised their family. During his career as a chemist and metallurgist, he worked at various companies including GE, Schenectady, N.Y., Avco, Wilmington, Mass., Sperry Rand, Sudbury, Mass., Kennecott Copper Corporation, Lexington, Mass., and the Gould Research Laboratory in Newburyport, Mass.

He was past chairman and three term elected member of the School Committee, member of the finance committee, a member of the historical commission, parishioner of the former Sacred Heart Church, and a member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society, of Our Lady of Hope.

Pojasek is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Mark S. Pojasek (Maureen) of Summerfield N.C., Jeanne E. Gerrish of Topsfield, Mass., and Patricia A. Geanakos (Jonathan) of New Canaan; seven grandchildren; sisters, Mary Palen (Fred) of Ipswich and Alice Landry of Hudson, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Theodore Pojasek.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28 at Our Lady of Hope Church in Ipswich, Mass. Burial will be at the Highland Cemetery.
