26-Year-Old Bridgeport Man Charged With Murder In Late-Night Shooting Death

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A 26-year-old man has been charged with murder in a shooting Friday night that sprang from an altercation between two men on Berkshire Avenue in Bridgeport, the Connecticut Post said.

Jovanne Brown of 302 Glenwood Ave. was charged with felony murder, robbery and weapons offenses and held on $1 million bond in the death of 26-year-old Michael Watkins, police told the Post.  Brown shot Watkins multiple times, and Watkins fired back, striking Brown in the chest, the Post said.

While being treated for his gunshot wounds, Brown lied about his injuries but later confessed to shooting Watkins, who was shot in the head, the Post said.

It was the fourth homicide of the year in Bridgeport — and the second homicide on Friday.

Early Friday, Oscar Hernandez, 39, is accused of stabbing to death Nidia Gonzalez, 26, in their home at 69 Greenwood Road and fleeing with their 6-year-old daughter, police said. The father and daughter were found after a police pursuit near State College, Pa. 

Hernandez was held as a fugitive from justice, and Bridgeport Police will be seeking his extradition on a murder charge, Capt. Brian Fitzgerald said.
