According to a statement from the motor vehicle club and travel organization, the department’s safety initiatives include an active mature driver improvements program, a seat belt enforcement program, an impaired driving obstacle course for teens and a child passenger safety seat program.

Two New Canaan employees -- Tiger Mann of the Public Works Department and Fred Tiani, a civilian employee of the police department -- also were recognized for their efforts to keep local roads safe.

“Mann and Tiani worked together, evaluated problem traffic areas, conducted traffic planning studies, handled logistics to set up traffic calming hardware and developed solutions to alleviate roadway safety concerns,” the statement said.

The awards were presented recently during AAA’s seventh annual Community Traffic Safety Awards luncheon at Testo’s in Bridgeport, according to the statement.
