NEW CANAAN, Conn. - A car crashed into the garage of a home on White Birch Road in New Canaan Thursday afternoon, causing a small fire, officials said.

The driver, 34, said the accelerator of his 1991 white Cadillac Brougham got stuck and he couldn't stop the car, Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said in a news release.

The car had been traveling east on the ride and ran off the road and hit the garage, Ogrinc said.

The car caught fire and it spread to the garage, Ogrinc said. The driver was taken to Norwalk Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"It looked like a movie. It's like you had a rocket flying," said John Tosone, who lives a few houses down and saw the accident.

The driver got out of the car while it was still moving and began chasing the car as it headed toward the house, Tosone said.

The fire, which was reported around 1:30 p.m., was put out in about 10 minutes, Fire Chief Ed Karl said.

Most of the damage was in the garage. The home itself sustained minor, Assistant Fire Chief Jack Hennessey said.

The car also hit another car inside the home's garage, which had to be propped up with a stabilizing bar, Hennessey said.

A person inside the home was not injured. The home cannot be occupied because power was cut off. The family living there will stay with relatives, Hennessey said.
