Charges have been dismissed against John V. Mara, 22, who was then a student at Fairfield University students and who lives in Mount Kisco, N.Y., said attorney William Dow of New Haven. Mara's uncle is Giants' owner John Mara.

“From the very beginning, Jack Mara swore he was innocent," Dow said in a statement. "He did not assault the complainant. The evidence has proven his innocence.

“We are gratified that the State has agreed and that the charges are dismissed.

“Jack is an outstanding young man and has a bright future. He and his family intend to move on from this unfortunate incident.”

Original story (Feb. 25, 2013): FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Mount Kisco man and relative of the owner of the New York Giants was charged Friday with felony assault in Fairfield, according to police reports.

Fairfield police were called to St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport on New Year’s Day because of a report of an assault victim receiving surgery for life-threatening injuries, according to the police report. The victim, a Fairfield University student, was at a party on Fairfield Beach Road when he was struck in the head with a glass bottle, police said.

Investigators identified John V. Mara, 22, of Hammond Ridge Road in Mount Kisco, N.Y., as the suspect in the case, according to police reports. He turned himself in after learning of a warrant for his arrest Friday evening, police say. Mara, also a Fairfield University student, is the nephew of John Mara, the owner of the New York Giants football team. The team had no comment on the incident as of Monday morning.

Mara was charged with first-degree assault, a felony, and a breach of the peace, a misdemeanor. He was released on a $150,000 bond, and he is scheduled to appear March 8 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
