Conn. State Police: Accidents, DUIs, Tickets Decline Over July 4 Holiday

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — The number of accidents, DUI arrests and speeding tickets declined over the July 4th weekend this year, Connecticut State Police said, although the holiday was shorter than in 2014.

The final Connecticut State Police holiday statistics for the July 4th Holiday Operation are:

  • Total accidents: 170
  • With injury: 48
  • Fatal: 2
  • DUI Arrests: 33
  • Speeding tickets: 859
  • Other hazardous moving violation tickets: 2,461

The holiday count began on July 3 at midnight and continued until midnight on July 5.

Before the holiday count began, a 17-year-old girl was killed when she was struck by a car while crossing Lake Avenue Extension in Danbury just before 9:30 p.m. July 2, police said. Rebecca Draper Townsend was a 2015 graduate of Immaculate High School in Danbury and was headed to Notre Dame in the fall.

For 2014, the holiday period was July 3 to July 6, a full day longer due to the calendar. The final statistics included:

  • Total accidents: 312
  • With injury: 47
  • Fatals: 0
  • DUI Arrests: 42
  • Speeding tickets: 1,559
  • Other hazardous moving violation tickets: 3,841

State Troopers will continue to enforce all motor vehicle laws throughout the summer.
