The incident occurred at dismissal time at Broadview Middle School, Pascarella said in the call. He said staff members took appropriate action and all children were safe.

Monday was the last day of school in Danbury. Pascarella wished parents and students a happy summer after a difficult school year with closures caused by a hurricane and blizzards.

The district's staff and students were also profoundly affected by the deadly massacre at nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown in December, he said.
