Police were called to Mansfield Avenue at around 2:45 p.m. on Monday, July 10 on a report of an erratic driver swerving in and out of its lane, police said. When they arrived at the parking lot of St. Paul's Church, they were waved down by the complainant, who pointed out the suspicious car that was now pulled over on the side of the road, police said.
Police approached the car and spoke to the driver, identified as 52-year-old Glenn Gruttadauria of Derby. He told police that he was driving to see an ex-girlfriend in Bridgeport, and when asked if he knew what town he was in, police say he told officers, "I need to get back to the Merritt." He then told officers that he was going to the Trumbull Mall to get his phone fixed, police said.
Police said that Gruttadauria had the odor of alcohol on his breath and had bloodshot, glassy eyes. When asked if he had been drinking, he said he'd had a couple of beers, police said.
Gruttadauria failed his field sobriety tests and was arrested, police said. While searching his car, police found several empty vodka bottles and an unopened can of beer, according to police.
At headquarters he submitted to a breathalyzer, which showed his BAC at .1564 and .1514. His bond was set at $250, which he was unable to post, but it was later decreased by a bond commissioner to a promise to appear in court on July 24.
