The incident took place around 3:15 a.m. Sunday when officers on patrol in the area of South Beach Avenue and West End Avenue saw two vehicles that had been reported stolen fly through a red light, said Lt. John Slusarz.

When officers turned on the lights and sirens the two cars took off and continued at a high rate of speed until they crashed into each other by Drinkwater Place and the Riverside School, police said.

One vehicle, a 2004 Volvo X70, struck a telephone pole and severed it from its base. The vehicle was later found to have been stolen from a  home in Darien, the police report said.

Both occupants of the Volvo were juveniles and the driver did not have a license, the report said.

He later admitted that he fled from police because he knew the vehicle was stolen, police said.

Officers also recovered a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee, reported stolen in Old Greenwich. The driver and any passengers inside escaped, the report said.

The unidentified teens found in the Volvo were charged with larceny, conspiracy to commit larceny, criminal mischief, engaging in a police pursuit and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, in addition to several other charges.

The teens, ages 16 and 17, were turned over to family members.
