Five Arrested After Car Theft And Chase In Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. — Five people were arrested after stealing a car and leading police on a chase in Greenwich last week, according to Greenwich Time.

Police were called to Cos Cob Friday on a report of a group of people breaking into cars north of Route 1, according to Greenwich Time. When they arrived, they found a stolen Mercedes-Benz speeding on Post Road, and a brief chase was broken off due to safety concerns, Greenwich Time reported. That same car was spotted a little while later Friday morning, and after going down a dead end, the people in the car got out and scattered, according to Greenwich Time.

Police arrested several suspects after sending out a large response to the area that included canines and search boats.

Two suspects were spotted while trying to hid in reeds near the Mianus River, while another escaped capture by jumping off the Route 1 bridge into the Mianus River, Greenwich Time reported.

Police charged 18-year-old Akeyle Baker of the Bronx with speeding, reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit, larceny and interfering with an officer. Shayshawn Covert, 18, of the Bronx was charged with burglary, larceny and interfering with an officer. Demetri Douglas, 18, of the Bronx, was charged with burglary and larceny. Two 17-year-old juveniles were also arrested, Greenwich Time reported.
