The arrest came at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, June 19, after Richard J. Cannone was seen driving south on Danbury Road near Old Highway, Wilton police said.

His car's tire was missing from the front driver side wheel and the car's aluminum rim was riding directly on the pavement, police said.

Officers who stopped the car south of Cricket Lane said Cannone displayed signs of intoxication and did not know his tire was worn away to the rim, police said.

Cannone failed field sobriety testing, police said. A breath test revealed his blood alcohol level was 0.2112, nearly triple the legal limit of 0.08, police said.

Cannone was charged with DUI, reckless driving and unsafe tires, police said.

Upon further investigation, police found that Cannone had fled after he had been involved in an accident with a limousine in New Canaan earlier that night, police said.

New Canaan officers went to Wilton police headquarters and issued Cannone a misdemeanor summons for evading responsibility and other motor vehicle charges, police said.

He was released on $260 bond for a June 30 court date.
