STAMFORD, Conn. Stamford Police captured a fugitive Thursday evening who is wanted in several theft and illegal use of credit card cases ariound the U.S., Capt. Richard Conklin said.
The man was found at the Stamford Athletic Center, pacing and snooping around the locker room, and members called police believing he was going to commit a robbery, Conklin said. After checking his fingerprints police realized the suspect was Ilir Gecaj, 41, who has federal warrants for his arrest out of New York, Michigan, New Canaan, Westport, Ridgefield, and New Haven, he said.
According to Conklin, Gecaj goes into locker rooms and takes credit cards and other documents, and runs up charges at jewelry stores, electronic stores, and other places.
The suspect, who was born in Yugoslavia, gave police a false name when he was first arrested, Conklin said. In the U.S., Gecaj has been on file for quite some time, with an arrest record that includes assault, robbery, and narcotics charges, he said.
He was charged with third-degree criminal trespassing, interfering with officers, third-degree forgery, third-degree identity theft, and fugitive of justice, Conklin said. He was held on $1 million bond and a federal detainer has been placed on him, the captain said.
