NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A bat landed on the neck of a New Canaan man Thursday morning as he was drinking a cup of coffee, Animal Control officer Mary Ann Kleinschmitt said.
Kleinschmitt said her office received a call at about 7:36 a.m. from a home on Oak Street. The man initially thought it was a bug and noticed it was a bat when he brushed it off, she said. The bat was contained in a storage container and was later euthanized to be tested for rabies.
The man, whose name was not released, has begun receiving medical shots for rabies exposure, Kleinschmitt said. He may stop taking the shots if it’s determined that the bat is not rabid, she said.
“If it was on his neck, saliva did get on him,” she said, noting that the saliva would contain rabies.
Kleinschmitt said it’s not common to see bats this time of year, but the bat may have entered the home to get out of the cold. Bats are not trying to harm humans, she said.
The last report of a positive bat in New Canaan was last Oct. 15 when a bat was found in a home on Weed Street.
