Officers from the New Canaan Police Department were dispatched to Jelliff Mill Road shortly before 9:15 p.m. on Monday night, where there was a report of a two-car crash that may have involved an intoxicated driver.

Upon arrival at the scene, police said that while speaking with the motorists involved in the crash, it was determined that one of the drivers, Stamford resident Douglas Alderman, 58, showed signs of impairment. Alderman went on to fail multiple Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and he was taken into custody.

At New Canaan Police Headquarters, Alderman refused to submit to a breathalyzer, and he was charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and cited for following too closely.

Following arraignment on the DWI charge, he was held in custody in lieu of $250 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon.
