NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- A New York man was charged with vandalizing a car in New Canaan with a large scratch, pictures of genitals and profanity, according to police.

Police said that at around 4 p.m. on March 17 they received a complaint about a car that had been vandalized at 49 Locust Ave. Someone had left a long scratch in the paint on the driver's side, and images of male genitalia and profanity had been written on the windows with some kind of soap or lotion, police said. The total cost to repair the damage was $1,760, according to police.

Officers investigating the incident were able to get the license plate of a suspect vehicle, and identified the perpetrator as Luke Salvatore, 21, of Bedford Corners, N.Y. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he turned himself in on Thursday.

Salvatore was charged with first-degree criminal mischief. He was released on a $2,000 bond and will appear in court on May 22.
