New Canaan Police Resolve Issues With Temporary Pistol Permits

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- The New Canaan Police Department, which had stopped issuing temporary state pistol permits last week because of problems checking the mental health background of applicants, is once again issues the permits, according to WTNH-TV.

Police Chief Leon Krolikowski had said the mental health background of applicants was not accessible from the state. But the New Canaan Police Department has "confirmed and clarified a protocol with the Department of Public Safety and Public Protection, which allows us to resume issuing temporary state pistol permits," WTNH-TV reported.

Krolikowski had said he didn't not want to issue a permit to someone with a mental issue that prohibits them from possessing a firearm, the report said.

In Connecticut, a 60-day permit is granted following background checks using state and federal databases to make sure the applicant is not prohibited from possessing a firearm, WTNH said. Then the applicant applies for a permanent permit with state police.
