Officers will be looking for naughty and nice motorists as well as pedestrians.

Nice and safe drivers, for example, obey traffic laws, don’t speed, stop at crosswalks, aren’t distracted and wear seatbelts, police said. Good pedestrians use crosswalks. Officers are rewarding them with gift cards from several participating businesses.

These locations include Baskin-Robbins, Chicken Joes, Garelick & Herbs, Oxygen Fitness, Starbucks, Stew Leonard’s and Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee.

Naughty and unsafe drivers and pedestrians, such as those that are distracted, speed, drive recklessly, drive while under the influence or don’t use crosswalks, will be ticketed/fined and/or arrested during this initiative.

The goal is to positively reinforce safe driving and pedestrian behaviors. This effort will be concentrated in the center of town.

The New Canaan Police Department said it is committed to the safety of pedestrians and motorists. They remind residents to be alert, drive safely, walk safely and help prevent accidents.

The New Canaan Police Department wants everyone to have a safe and happy holiday season.
