The department will be collecting prescription medication, over-the-counter medication and pet medications, a police statement said. The contents will be incinerated periodically to prevent misuse, the release said.
Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the state, the release said.
Medications can be put in the drop-box confidentiality, the release said.
“The medication drop box program has been a huge success,” Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said. The department has collected about 550 pounds of medications since the program started. "We appreciate the community’s cooperation in protecting both the environment and the public from the dangers of drug diversion and abuse.”
The drop-box initiative started two years ago in New Canaan, Greenwich, Ridgefield and Wilton and has been adopted by the state Department of Consumer Protection’s drug control policies. It has expanded to more than 30 police departments across Connecticut.
“This regional pilot program provided the data that was needed to be able to implement this program in other interested communities,” Ingrid Gillespie, director of the Lower Fairfield County Regional Action Counsel, said in the statement.
