New Canaan Police Stop Issuing Temporary Pistol Permits

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- The New Canaan Police Department has suspended issuing temporary state pistol permits because Police Chief Leon Krolikowski says the mental health background of applicants is not accessible, according to WTNH-TV.

"The New Canaan Police Department is suspending the issuance of Temporary State Pistol Permits due to a flaw in the application process, which compromises public safety — specifically, how the process relates to mental health screening," Krolikowski said in a statement at the Patch.com website.

But the governor’s office says that information is available through State Police, WTNH-TV reported.

In Connecticut, a 60-day permit is granted following background checks using state and federal databases to make sure the applicant is not prohibited from possessing a firearm, WTNH said. Then the applicant applies for a permanent permit with state police.
