The incident began at about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday, when employees at an Elm Street store reported that a female suspect had stolen about $440 worth of clothing from the store and ran from the scene, New Canaan police said.

New Canaan police put out a "be on the lookout" alert to area departments with a description of the car and the license plate.

Westport police spotted the car on the Exit 44 off-ramp of the Merritt Parkway, police said.

Westport officers detained the suspect, identified as Meghann Freeman, 34, of Newtown, police said.

She was picked up and arrested by New Canaan officers, police said.

Freeman was charged with sixth-degree larceny and released on $2,000 bond for a Nov. 27 court appearance.
