NEW CANAAN, Conn. – One person was taken to the hospital after a van crashed into a utility pole Thursday afternoon, and several homes on Laurel Road in New Canaan lost power due to the crash.

The wreck occurred at about 5:15 p.m. on Laurel Road near Canoe Hill Road, New Canaan Police said. The van, which apparently belonged to a pool company, sustained heavy damage to its right side after cracking the utility pole next to a private drive. The cause of the wreck was not immediately known.

One person was transported to a hospital, New Canaan Fire Chief Ed Karl said, but he did not know the extent of any injuries.

Traffic was blocked on Laurel Road between Canoe Hill  and Turner Hill roads while police investigated. Connecticut Light & Power crews came to replace the damaged pole.
