"My charge to you today is to do just that - get it right," Krolikowski told Kelly Coughlin, 21, and William Sheehan, 24, in a ceremony Wednesday welcoming them to the New Canaan Police Department.

Coughlin is a Trumbull resident who graduated from The College of New Jersey, in Ewing, N.J., with a bachelor of science degree with a major in criminology and a minor in Spanish.

A basketball player in high school and college, she said she was seeking a career that involved working with others.

"It's one of those jobs that its a very rewarding experience, and being someone who is an athlete my whole life I wanted a job where there is a lot of camaraderie and teamwork," she said after the ceremony.

Sheehan comes from an extended family of New York City Police Department officers, so becoming a police officer was always an option for him.

"I always thought about it, and I know that it is a great career," he said. "It's very stable, and you can start a family with it, which is what I am interested in doing at some point."

The Stony Point, N.Y., resident graduated from North Rockland High School and continued his education at Methodist University, where he studied business administration. He completed his education at Coastal Carolina University, in Conway, S.C., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management and business management.

Both had been sworn in onTuesday and will begin their studies at the Police Academy in Meriden. They are scheduled to graduate Dec. 16.
