Norwalk Police: We'll Catch Parking Lot Shooter

NORWALK, Conn. – The shooting of a 50-year-old Greenwich woman in the parking lot of a Norwalk supermarket Wednesday was a random act, Norwalk Mayor Richard Moccia and Police Chief Thomas Kulhawik said.

The mayor and police chief held a Thursday morning press conference to discuss the incident , which happened at about 1:40 p.m. at the Stop & Shop on Connecticut Avenue. They said the victim is expected to recover since no vital organs were hit when she was shot once in the abdomen. She remains in Norwalk Hospital.

Kulhawik promised to bring the shooter to justice. He said police have surveillance video of the suspect. Lt. Timothy Murphy said the New Canaan Police Department will use special equipment to enhance the video.

The woman had dropped off her 15-year-old son at the Rip Van Winkle Lanes and gone to the store, where she has shopped before, Moccia said. She parked her Mercedes at the far end of the parking lot, possibly because she had her Labradoodle in the car and that part of the lot had shade.

Police said the shooter approached the woman as she walked back to her car. They are not sure what happened after that, but said both the woman and her assailant got in the car, where at least one shot was fired. There may have been a scuffle, they said, and the shooter then ran across the street.

Witnesses were very helpful, they said. Police saturated the area, concentrating their search in Colonial Village.

Police are looking for a 20- to 30-year-old black man with fair skin, clean shaven, about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. He was wearing black tennis shoes, a dark hoodie-type sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Norwalk police detectives are actively investigating the shooting and further descriptive information will be released as it develops. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Detective Bureau at 203-854-3011. All calls will be kept confidential.
