Officer Shoots, Kills Armed Man At Ridgefield Home

Updated at 7 a.m.: RIDGEFIELD, Conn. -- A man who waved a handgun at police in the yard of a rural Ridgefield home was shot by an officer late Friday afternoon and died later at Danbury Hospital, state police confirmed.

Ridgefield police had responded to a report of a domestic dispute at a large home at 423 Ridgebury Road at about 5 p.m., police said. When officers arrived, they saw a man in the yard with a handgun, state police said. 

Ridgefield officers ordered the man to put down his weapon, state police said. He refused to comply, raised the weapon toward officers and was shot by a Ridgefield officer, state police said.

The man was transported by ambulance to Danbury Hospital, where he died shortly after arriving, state police said.   

His identity was withheld to notify his next of kin, state police said. Police did not identify the officer involved.

At the request of the Danbury state's attorney and the Ridgefield police chief, the Connecticut State Police responded to investigate. The investigation was continuing, and an autopsy will be conducted, state police said. 

The home is a 9,000-square-foot, four-bedroom Cape  on 3.5 acres near the New York border. It was built in 2001.

Updated at 10:15 p.m.: RIDGEFIELD, Conn. -- A Ridgefield police officer shot and killed a man during a domestic disturbance call at 423 Ridgebury Road, television news stations reported late Friday.

The man refused to comply with police when they tried to disarm him and reportedly raised his weapon, and a Ridgefield police officer shot him, WTNH reported.

The man reportedly died later at Danbury Hospital, the report said. 

Original story: RIDGEFIELD, Conn. - An officer-involved shooting was reported at a Ridgebury Road home in Ridgefield early Friday evening, according to press reports. 

The Danbury News-Times reported that several shots were fired, but there were no fatalities. A police officer was taken to a local hospital for observation, but all Ridgefield officers were "OK," the report said.

The Ridgefield Press is reporting that police were called to the house at about 5 p.m. in response to a report of a  domestic incident. Two ambulances were dispatched to the residence and subsequently went the hospital, the report said.

Ridgefield police said they had no comment and that it would be some time before they released any information. 

Norwalk police confirmed there was an incident "somewhere nearby." They are reported to have responded to the incident. Wilton police also confirmed an incident occurred. 

The home is a 9,000-square-foot, four-bedroom Cape  on nearly 3.5 acres near the New York border. It was built in 2001. Ridgefield tax assessor records show the home was last sold in 2009 for $1.2 million. It does not list a current owner or any prior owners. The home was listed on several foreclosure real estate websites in 2009 before it was sold.
