Shelton police arrested 33-year-old Lance Churchill, of 26 Sunset Drive, Derby, on Friday, June 16, after the incident at Apple Tree Day Care at 117 Long Hill Cross Roads, Shelton.

The daycare was hosting a Father’s day party, which all the children’s fathers were invited to attend, police said.

During the party, the children made Father’s day cards and gave them to their dads, police said.

"One of the children playfully took Churchill’s card that he received from his son and ran around the room with it," police said.

Churchill, who is 6-foot-4 and weighs 270 pounds, responded by "chasing the child and picking him up over his head," police said.

After putting the child down, Churchill "pinned him to the ground and began to scream at him in front of all the other children," police said.

The incident ended when daycare staff "ripped the child away from Churchill and called police."

When officers arrived, Churchill wanted the 5-year-old boy arrested, police said.

Instead, Churchill was arrested and charged with risk of injury to a minor and disorderly conduct. He was released on $1,500 bond for a June 30 appearance in Derby Superior Court.
