Responding to a call of a fight Tuesday night, Officer Tomasz Cydzik took 24-year-old Khari Trevon Calhoon of New Britain ionto custody at the Willowbrook Mall store, Capt. Lawrence W. Martin said.

Meanwhile, Officers Skylar Cauceglia and Tomasz Cydzik chased down a 2016 Nissan Sentra from northbound Route 23 to eastbound Route 80, he said.

The driver, 24-year-old Ishaya Paige James of Hartford, "provided false information and identification," after which the officers noticed "a strong odor of marijuana" coming from inside the car, Martin said.

A search turned up a bag of pot, as well as James's correct identification, he said.

Besides empty plastic bags commonly used to package the drug, the officers found bags full of wallets, jewelry, children's clothes and shoes, sunglasses, sports bras and hats -- with security sensors and tags still attached, the captain said.

The car was impounded and all three suspects were taken to police headquarters.

Calhoon, who was charged with shoplifting, had stolen $946 worth of merchandise, while James -- who was charged with shoplifting, hindering and pot possession -- took $1,232 worth, Martin said.

The third suspect, 21-year-old Malaysia Blizzard, also of Hartford, stole $700 worth -- bringing the overall total to $2,878. She, too, was charged with shoplifting, hindering and marijuana possession.

All three were issued summonses and released pending court hearings, under New Jersey's 2017 Bail Reform & Speedy Trial Act.

"The seized merchandise owners will be notified and more charges will follow," Martin said.
