Jan Adamovic, 36, of 40 Bungalow Park Drive, is charged with fourth-degree sexual assault and practicing massage without a license. He was released on $5,000 bond to make his first appearance in state Superior Court in Norwalk on Friday.
The woman, who is in her 40s, told police that she had met with Adamovic about a dozen times in the past year, according to the arrest warrant. He charged $100 to $170 for each session, police said.
Adamovic told police he received a certificate last year from the International Academy of Sound Healing in Vermont.
In their last session, she had laid down on her bedroom floor with a mask over her eyes to keep out any light, police said. He then put a blanket over her and placed Tibetan singing bowls around her, police said. The bowls are played by lightly striking the rims with a padded mallet to help in the meditative experience.
The woman had taken her migraine medication and a muscle relaxant before the session, police said.
During his police interview, Adamovic told officers he had behaved a bit unprofessionally and inappropriately with the woman on this occasion because he felt she was "in need of intimacy and love" due to what he claimed was a poor relationship with her husband, police said.
He said that he had massaged her from head to toe, something he was not licensed to do, and said he rubbed her breasts and crotch, police said. Adamovic said he had done that over her clothes and denied he had placed his hands under her clothing, police said.
However, the woman told officers that she could feel him sliding a hand inside of her pants, police said. She told police that unlike previous sessions, she felt numb and that her arms felt like "jelly" and that she was unable to stop him or to say anything, police said.
She said the man abruptly left, unlike previous sessions when he would stay and talk, police said. She told police it took her a while to realize what had happened and that she vomited twice for unknown reasons, police said. The woman told her husband, who then called police.
During a second interview with police on the following day, she said she spoke to her psychiatrist, who told her she may have been drugged, police said. The woman told officers the man hadn't provided any food or beverages but that he did have water and because she was blindfolded she wouldn't be able to tell if there was anything in it, police said.
During the investigation, officers discovered there was a deportation order for the man. On the paperwork lodged in the Norwalk courthouse, his native country is referred to only by the initials SK. Those initials correspond to Slovakia.
Wilton Police sought an arrest warrant, and Adamovic turned himself in on Feb. 24.
