The incident occurred at the end of the game, shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday, police said. The two teams were leaving the ice when the 9-year-old was struck from behind by an opposing player, Stamford police Sgt. Simon Blanc said.

According to the youth hockey association's schedule, the game was between a Stamford U10 Squirt team and a Central Youth Hockey U10 Squirt team.

The Stamford player was struck in an area between his helmet and shoulder pads and fell down, police said.

Blanc said the two coaches exchanged words after the incident. The youth was taken to Stamford Hospital, and his mother called police. The extent of the youth's injuries was unknown, police said.
