At 1:37 a.m., the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a call and dispatched Engine One, Ladder One and Car Three to a motor vehicle accident with injuries on southbound I-95 just before the Exit 20 off-ramp in Fairfield.

Upon arrival, Engine One reported a two-car motor vehicle accident with heavy damage in the center and right lanes.

Connecticut State Police was on the scene and released a video of the crash captured by a trooper's dash cam..

Engine One and Ladder One provided protection to the accident scene, allowing for only one lane of travel. Engine One deployed a hoseline and an extinguisher for safety due to an active gasoline leak from a vehicle, fire officials said.

The driver of the striking vehicle had sustained serious injuries, fire officials said. Later, it was determined that his vehicle had collided with a previous accident scene involving two motor vehicles along the shoulder, which had occurred minutes earlier.

American Medical Response arrived on the scene with an ambulance and a supervisor. The driver was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, fire officials said.

Engine Two was special called to the scene for additional manpower and equipment.

State Police remind motorists to move over and slow down, when there are emergency vehicles, tow trucks, or construction vehicles on the shoulder.

This incident shows the dangers of the being stopped on the highway, State Police said.

State Police also remind motorists to stay in their vehicles after crashes. If the State Police cruiser had not there, the two people in the shoulder could have been struck and even killed, state police said.

The Connecticut State Move Over Law “requires motorists approaching stationary emergency vehicles to immediately slow to a speed below the posted speed limit, and if traveling in the lane adjacent to an emergency vehicle, move over one lane, unless it is unreasonable or unsafe to do so. As defined by law, ‘emergency vehicles’ include ambulances, fire vehicles, law enforcement vehicles, highway maintenance vehicles or licensed wreckers.”
