The incident began at about 5:25 p.m. Friday when troopers responded to a report of a man threatening to jump off the bridge, state police said.

When they arrived, troopers found the man on the opposite side of a safety wall/barrier and tried to talk him to safety, state police said.

But the man refused and moved closer to the edge of the bridge in an attempt to jump, state police said. That is when the unidentified trooper sprang into action, jumping over the wall and grabbing the man to prevent him from jumping off the bridge, state police said.

The trooper held the man against the bridge, with no barrier between him and the edge, while other troopers, New Haven police officers and New Haven firefighters pulled the man over the wall to safety, state police said.
