Richard Becker, 52, of Martha Place, was charged with fifth-degree larceny. He was held on $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 19.
On Jan. 19, 2015, Becker walked into the Post Road East store carrying no merchandise. Twenty minutes later he was caught on a surveillance camera attempting to return a $955.99 sweater with no receipt at the customer service desk, police said.
After returning the sweater, he picked out two pair of socks, a pair of underwear and four shirts, valued at $711.88, and bought them, receiving a $244.11 merchandise credit based on the price of the returned sweater, police said.
He told the clerk his name was Richard Becker and said he lived at a Darien address, police said.
On Feb. 2, 2015, Mitchell’s employees called police to the store, where they believed Becker was back again. Officers identified him and sought a warrant.
Westport police arrested Becker on the warrant at Newtown Police Department Thursday.
