WESTPORT, Conn. — Motorists passing by Westport Fire Headquarters Wednesday morning may have done a double take or two, as emergency workers tried to rescue a “person” trapped under a car.

What they were actually watching, though, was Westport firefighters and EMS personnel training on some new rescue equipment.

Around 8:30 a.m., several staffers tried out new stabilization and lifting struts in different mock scenarios, using life-like mannequins to fill in for victims.

EMS personnel were able to observe firefighters extricating victims and establish their own treatment plans.

"This coordinated and collaborative training between Fire and EMS personnel builds upon the familiarity and trust between the two public safety agencies, each team understanding and respecting each other’s role, in what is often a complex but time-critical event,” said Brett Kirby, assistant chief of training for the fire department.
