The crash occurred shortly before 6 a.m. on southbound I-95 between exits 18 and 17, Lt. Matthew Cohen said.
The car had gone off the road and into an embankment, coming to a rest on its roof with two people trapped inside, Cohen said.
While several firefighters worked to stabilize the car and extract those inside using the jaws of life, other firefighters used the hose line for potential fire suppression and assisted patients from other cars, he said.
Both of the people were extracted from the car by 6:15 a.m. and were taken to an area hospital for treatment.
The last fire unit cleared the scene just before 7:30 a.m. The resulting traffic jam caused problems on I-95 for hours and had not completely cleared by 9:30 a.m.
