Windows Smashed, Items, Thousands In Cash Stolen From Cars In Darien

DARIEN, Conn. -- The windows of three cars were smashed at the Darien YMCA last week and thousands of dollars worth of items were stolen, including $16,000 in cash and a $50,000 Rolex, according to police.

The thefts all occurred within a short time at the YMCA on Post Road on the afternoon of Tuesday, Jan. 13, police said.

The first theft was reported at 3:45 p.m. The owner of a 2010 Land Rover LR4 told police that she parked her car at 3:30 p.m. and went inside to drop off her kids. When she returned 15 minutes later, she found that the driver's side window had been smashed, police said. A Kate Spade handbag valued at $400 and a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses valued at $250 were taken, police said.

While canvassing the parking lot, officers found two other cars with smashed windows, police said. One was a 2014 Lincoln Continental Navigator, which the driver had parked at 3 p.m. The thief or thieves took a Michael Kors purse valued at $200, a Coach wallet valued at $200, as well as $1,000 in cash and credit cards, police said.

The third car that was broken into was a 2013 Land Rover that had been parked between 3:15 and 3:30 p.m., police said. A purse valued at $500 and a Louis Vuitton wallet, valued at $1,000, were reported taken from the car, police said. The purse contained $16,000 in cash, police said. A glass jewelry box containing a platinum Rolex watch valued at $50,000 and a diamond wedding ring of unknown value were also taken, police said.

Police are advising residents not to keep valuables in plain sight when they leave their vehicles. 

All the cars were parked in the same area of the parking lot. Police are investigating surveillance video, and the incidents remain under investigation.
