Woman Caught In The Act Of Using Fake Card At Darien ATM, Police Say

DARIEN , Conn. -- A woman wearing a dark wig and sunglasses was arrested using fraudulently "cloned" credit cards at an ATM in Darien, according to police.

Police were called to the People's United Bank on Heights Road by the bank's security department, who were concerned about a woman attempting to use suspected fraudulent credit cards at the ATM. When officers arrived they found a woman, later identified as 38-year-old Gabriela Enache of Flushing, N.Y., who was in the ATM vestibule. She was wearing what appeared to be a dark wig and dark sunglasses, police said. 

Enache was asked to step away from the vestibule, and appeared extremely nervous, police said. She would not answer basic questions as to what she was doing at the bank and where she was coming from, according to police.

Officers saw that Enache was holding an open wallet containing a large amount of cash, as well as a large number of credit and/or gift cards, police said. Police recovered 10 Visa and American Express cards that were confirmed to be fraudulently "cloned" cards, according to police. The Connecticut Financial Crimes Task Force assisted in identifying the cards, according to police.

Police said it was determined that Enache was in the process of committing a larceny and credit card crimes. She was charged with 10 counts of credit card theft, five counts of illegal use of a credit card, 10 counts of illegal furnishing of money/goods on credit card, 10 counts of unlawful completion of a credit card, five counts of receipt of money/goods by use of illegal credit card, and one count of fourth-degree larceny.

Enache was unable to post a $150,000 bond and went to court the next day. Police said the investigation into this incident is continuing.
