However, McKinney hammered Foley in Fairfield County, taking 13,303 votes compared with Foley's 9,724. But Foley easily outdistanced McKinney in the state's other seven counties to win the GOP primary for governor.
Statewide, Foley outpolled McKinney 44,135 to 37,345.
Foley's next challenge is to defeat Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy in November's general election.
In the race for lieutenant governor, New Canaan Republicans cast 294 votes for David Walker and 277 for the eventual winner Heather Somers. Penny Bacchiochi wound up with 198 votes.
It was a tight race for the position as Somers, the former Groton mayor, collected 34.5 percent of the more than 78,000 ballots cast statewide compared with Bacchiochi's 33.6 percent. Walker was a close third with 31.9 percent of the votes cast.
All vote totals are supplied by the secretary of the state's office.
New Canaan Republicans also came out strongly for comptroller candidate Sharon McLaughlin, giving her 551 votes compared with Angel Cadena's 138. Statewide, McLaughlin crushed Cadena 53,277 to 17,187.
New Canaan also went for the winner in the Republican primary for the state's 142nd State House District. Fred Wilms collected 121 votes compared with challenger Emily Wilson's 45.
Overall, Wilms received 564 votes compared with party-endorsed Wilson's 254 votes in the district that covers part of New Canaan and West Norwalk.
They were running to replace the retiring Larry Cafero in representing the 142nd District.
Wilms will face off against Norwalk Democrat Andy Garfunkel in the November election to be state representative for the district.
Of New Canaan's 6,432 registered Republicans, 798 voted in the primary.
