STAMFORD, Conn. — If he had been offered the post as director of the FBI, former U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Stamford told WTNH-TV in an exclusive interview, "probably I wold have said yes."

Lieberman, 75, was front-runner for the post last month, but he fell out of consideration after President Donald Trump chose one of the former senator's colleagues as his lawyer.

The interview was taped at Lieberman's Manhattan law firm after fired FBI director James Comey, formerly of Westport, testified Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The Democratic vice presidential candidate in 2000, Lieberman thought he could "bring some order" to the situation and said he misses working in government, WTNH said.

Other key points in the interview include Lieberman's views on how Trump is doing; whether the president is in legal trouble; why Trump was elected; about the call from Trump about the FBI job; and how he turned down the job.

Last week, Trump said he would nominate Christopher Wray, a graduate of Yale University and Yale Law School, to be the FBI director.
