NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- New Canaan First Selectman Rob Mallozzi III will not seek a primary to become the Republican candidate for first selectman in this year's election, after losing in the caucus last week to challenger Kevin Moynihan, according to the New Canaan Advertiser.

The three-term incumbent lost to Moynihan by 10 votes at the July 18 caucus of the New Canaan Republicans. He had initially asked for a recount of the votes following the caucus, but that request was denied, according to the New Canaan Advertiser.

Mallozzi released a statement on Monday saying that he would not seek to challenge Moynihan in a primary, the New Canaan Advertiser reported. He said that rather than put his family and community through a long election season, he would focus on work for the town and his own plans for the future, according to the New Canaan Advertiser.

He wished the best of luck to Moynihan and the rest of the Republican slate in the upcoming municipal election, according to the New Canaan Advertiser.
