Meet The Candidates For Easton Treasurer

EASTON, Conn. – Easton voters looking ahead to Friday’s special election for town treasurer can meet the three candidates at a breakfast at the Senior Center at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Wendy Bowditch, who was appointed treasurer by the Board of Selectmen on June 5, is being challenged by Robert Webbe and Vincent Caprio. All three are Republicans, but Webbe and Caprio will be listed on the ballot as “petitioning candidates” because Bowditch is running with the Easton Republican Town Committee’s support.

The special election cannot be held Nov. 6 because of a state statute that requires the election to be held within a certain period after it was planned, according to Derek Buckley, the Easton town clerk.

Bowditch was appointed after Christine Calvert resigned to take the tax collector position, which was vacated when Pat Hildebrand resigned at the end of May to move to Trumbull. The tax collector position is full-time, the treasurer part-time.

Webbe and Caprio were opposed to Bowditch’s appointment and were required to collect 20 signatures each to petition for an election. “After they collected the signatures and we authorized them , the state put them on the ballot as legal candidates,” Buckley said.

At the Senior Center event, the candidates will each get five minutes to introduce themselves and will then answer questions from the audience.

The event takes place at 650 Morehouse Road and is open to the public.
