Crary made the announcement at a news conference Wednesday afternoon with First Selectman Peter Tesei.

"Today it is somewhat of a bittersweet announcement to make," Tesei said as he announced that the "much beloved" Crary would retire.

"I would like to personally praise John for his dedication and work ethic on behalf of the town," Tesei said. "He has been an invaluable member of my administration."

Crary had worked for five years in Darien before moving to Greenwich.

He said Crary was heavily involved in bringing the town's budget under control after the financial crash and the recession cut deeply into its revenues.

"He has enjoyed my full confidence, admiration and support during his tenure and implemented many improvements that have benefited our community."

The town has hired Novak Consulting Group to conduct an executive search for his replacement, Tesei said.

Tesei joked that it would be difficult to find someone to "fill some very large shoes both figuratively and literally," in a reference to the tall Crary.

"It has been a real joy to work with the community. It has really gone by very quickly. I didn't expect seven years to fly by quite as quickly as it has," Crary said in the Mazza Room in Greenwich Town Hall as fellow department heads looked on.

"It really is the capstone of my career in terms of jobs," he said. "You really couldn't find a better place to work with more responsibilities and more challenges."

It is a key position in local government in Greenwich. Under the direction of the first selectman, the town administrator is responsible for all administrative functions relative to the daily operation of the departments under the supervision of the first selectman, according to the town website.

The town administrator also represents the first selectman in the daily operation and administration of all town departments and offices.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist first selectman with development, submission and administration of the town budget;
  • Review each department's annual budget, operations plan and capital improvement program;
  • Represent the first selectman in collective bargaining negotiations, confidential personnel issues and financial management;
  • Assists the first selectman in identifying and prioritizing town needs and participates in the development and implementation of long-range plans, goals, objectives and policies;
  • Provides liaison between First Selectman and various departments, boards, committees, task forces and community organizations
