New Canaan Offices Moving For Town Hall Renovation

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Moving Day has come for town offices to allow for New Canaan Town Hall's major renovation.

The offices of assessor and tax collector will be the first to move out of the 103-year-old main town building Friday. They will close at 11 a.m. and then reopen on Monday at the Stewart office complex on Elm Street, in the same building as Walter Stewart’s Market.

The fire marshal’s office and parking department will close at 11 a.m. next Friday and make their move to Elm Street next weekend. Departments on the second floor of Town Hall will eventually move to the New Canaan Police Department at 172 South Ave. The town clerk’s office, initially scheduled to be the first to relocate, will leave Town Hall after Election Day.

New Canaan will spend $131,000 to prepare offices in the Stewart office complex and the police department for the town employees.

The relocation precedes a long-desired renovation of Town Hall. Earlier this week, the Town Hall Building Committee voted unanimously to choose KSQ Architects of White Plains, N.Y. as architect for the renovation. First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III said KSQ was chosen over Perkins Eastman Associates – the firm that worked on the town’s long range plan - for several reasons, including architect Lea Cromwell’s expertise in preserving historic buildings.

Town officials say they want to have Town Hall employees out of the building before cold weather arrives because a boiler in the basement no longer works.
