All departments have moved out of Town Hall, said First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III, although officials with the registrar’s office remained to finalize details on the 2012 election. Town departments have relocated to the second floor of the New Canaan Police Department on South Avenue and the office complex next to Walter Stewart’s Market on Elm Street.

The moving — which began in September and finished last week when the town clerk's office vacated the building — went well, Mallozzi said.

“I’m satisfied with the hard work everyone has put in moving from Town Hall,” he said. Mallozzi said he has not had many calls from residents confused about the relocated departments. “Everyone has been extremely cooperative with this move.”

Officials opted to close Town Hall after a boiler in the basement failed last spring, and it became too costly to fix.

Demolition of the rear portion of Town Hall, along with asbestos abatement will begin early next year, Town Hall Building Committee Chairman Michael Avgerinos said. Renovation work will begin in June or July, Avgerinos said. Renovation of the Locust Avenue parking lot, which could become a tiered lot, will not begin until Town Hall renovations are nearly completed because of parking concerns, Avgerinos said.

The Town Hall Building Committee voted Monday to select the McCloud Group as the construction manager to oversee the renovation. Town officials will meet with McCloud officials Thursday to discuss the terms.

A contract between McCloud and the town must be reviewed by the town attorney and approved by other town boards, Avgerinos said.

The parking spaces behind Town Hall will be available for 90-minute parking and monitored by parking department staff until renovation work begins, Mallozzi said.
