BETHEL, Conn. — When Kristin Dubois and her family moved to Bethel this month for her husband's job, she knew she would miss her native Massachusetts — and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

But she took some comfort in knowing that Connecticut is represented by Sen. Chris Murphy, another Democrat whose politics she likes.

That's why Kristin Dubois headed Thursday morning with her kids, 8-year-old Christian and 7-year-old Ava, to meet Murphy at Jacqueline's in downtown Bethel.

Murphy took a moment from his 100-mile-plus walk across the state to chat with the brother and sister about history. Christian has developed a strong interest in the presidents and is memorizing the list of all 45.

"If you come to Washington, you can drop by my office and I can give you a tour of the Capitol," Murphy said before posing for a photo with the two kids.

The siblings were delighted by the attention, and mom was impressed.

"I wanted to meet Chris Murphy today because of all he's fought for, especially this past year," Dubois said. "He's so genuine, he's there speaking for us on the floor of the Senate."

She praised the senator's position on gun control and talked about her involvement as a Sandy Hook Promise leader "because I felt so much pain for the parents who lost their children in such an unimaginable way," she said.

Dubois knows the pain of losing a family member to violence. Her cousin, Mathew LaPorte, was killed at Virginia Tech "so it is also a cause very close to my heart," she said.

Dubois is volunteering to promote the Sandy Hook Promise programs , such as "Know The Signs" and " Start With Hello ," in the community. The program seek to protect children from further gun violence by teaching inclusion and knowing the signs of potential violence.

"I admire Chris Murphy for speaking out so powerfully on this issue and representing the families of Connecticut," she said.
