At a general membership meeting both Mayor Richard Moccia and his challenger Harry Rilling were invited to engage in a brief question and answer session where the candidates spoke about their respective records of public service, their future vision for the Police Department, and about the current state of labor relations in the City of Norwalk. After this meeting the police department voted to back Harry Rilling.
"The men and women of the Norwalk Police Union believe that as mayor, Harry Rilling will work to re-establish a cordial working relationship between city employees and city managers, and that he will respect not only the collective bargaining agreements that the city has with their unions, but the spirit of honesty and fairness with which they were written," said Detective David Orr, Local 1727 president, in a statement. "With that, the Norwalk Police Union proudly endorses Harry Rilling in his candidacy for mayor of the city of Norwalk."
Harry Rilling was a sworn police officer for over 41 years, 17 of which he served as Norwalk’s Chief of Police. Rilling rose through the ranks while managing the State of Connecticut’s 6th largest municipal police department.
“As mayor I will make sure the police and all city employees have a seat at the table and are heard and respected,” Rilling said in a statement.
