NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The renovated New Canaan Town Hall will be larger than the building that currently stands vacant on Main Street, according to the chairman of the committee working on the revamped town center.

The Town Hall Building Committee is imagining that the renovated Town Hall will be a two-story building that may be as large as 38,000 square feet, about 12,000 square feet larger than the now shuttered 104-year-old Town Hall, said Mike Avgerinos, chairman of the committee. The building committee discussed possible plans for Town Hall during a meeting Monday.

A larger Town Hall would allow more space for conference rooms as well as offices for land use departments. Those offices – planning and zoning, inland wetlands and watercourses and the building department – are currently at Irwin Park off Weed Street.

Although the classic façade facing Main Street will remain the same, Avgerinos said the renovated building would have an updated and more useful look. “The consensus is we’re in general not to imitate what’s there,” he said. “It will be a modern building, but with a flavor of the old. We’re not trying to imitate the old.”

The committee is also discussing whether a 150-seat auditorium should be on the first floor or second floor. Residents will have an opportunity to choose from among potential designs at a March 11 public hearing.

If all goes as scheduled, demolition work will begin this summer and renovations may begin in mid-September, Avgerinos said. Town Hall departments moved out of the town’s main building last November in advance of the renovation work.
