Selectman's Letter Clouds Easton Treasurer Race

EASTON, Conn. – Hanging over Friday’s special election for Easton town treasurer is a dispute concerning a letter from the first selectman supporting the incumbent, Wendy Bowditch.

Robert Webbe, one of two petitioning candidates, criticized the letter from First Selectman Thomas Herrmann to town residents endorsing Bowditch, who was appointed treasurer on June 5 and seeks to fill out the remainder of the term until November 2013. The letter also criticized the other candidates.

“Please support Wendy Bowditch for Treasurer,” the letter began. “The alternative is a cause for concern. A petitioning candidate is not vetted by a political party and may offer only dubious credentials for the job.”

“This election is about freedom and giving people choice,” Webbe said. “To deny that choice is a red flag.”

Vincent Caprio, the other petitioning candidate, called the letter “over the top,” and said, “We need to have a special election.” But he also complimented Bowditch as qualified to be treasurer.

“I’m sorry if the letter made people uncomfortable,” said Bowditch, who is supported by the Republican Town Committee.

The comments came at Wednesday morning at the Easton Senior Center where the candidates introduced themselves and answered questions from the audience.

When asked what he would do differently if elected, Webbe said he would issue a full report on town finances to enable residents to understand the financial issues.

Caprio said he would rely on his financial experience at a nanotechnology firm and as financial chairman of the Easton Community Center. He also said he’s self-employed  and has the time to devote to the position.

Bowditch said she’s volunteered for town service for 12 years on the Insurance Commission, six years as chair.

Polls will be open Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Samuel Staples Elementary School, 515 Morehouse Road.
