The Weston candidate, pointing to General Electric’s plan to move its corporate headquarters to Boston from Fairfield as evidence of Hartford Democrats’ failed policies, accused his incumbent rival, Jim Himes, of supporting a “big tax, big spend government approach.”
This approach, Shaban claimed in a recent statement, “has left this district -- one of the wealthiest in the country -- with too many schools, programs and infrastructure projects that are either broke or broken.”
Shaban, who represents Easton, Redding, and Weston in the state House in the 135th District, ran for Congress in 2014 – also against Himes – but withdrew from the race before the state GOP convention.
Himes was first elected in 2008. The 4th District is in the southwestern portion of the state and includes Oxford (New Haven County), and Shelton, Monroe, Trumbull, Fairfield, Redding, Ridgefield, Wilton, Stramford, Norwalk, Easton, Westport, Greenwich and Darien Counties (Fairfield County).
Quoting Himes’ remarks he said were made last November, Shaban said the congressman himself has acknowledged that the state’s financial woes are driving employers like GE away and hurting residents.
Blaming “federal representatives” for GE’s pending departure, Shaban further charged that Himes has tried to distance himself from his own party and policies.
“Himes' hollow rhetoric will not work this time because, like the current leadership in Hartford, he has proven himself to be a big-borrow, big-tax, big-spend Democrat who believes in a big centralized government,” Shaban said.
Citing what he called specific examples of the “gluttonous growth of our federal government’s size and spending,” Shaban also criticized Himes for supporting President Barack Obama’s affordable health care act and “stimulus boondoggle.”
