Boucher is the third Republican to form an exploratory committee for a possible run against Gov. Dannel Malloy, a Democrat.

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton and GOP Senate Leader John McKinney of Fairfield made announcements earlier this summer. The election will be November 2014. Tom Foley, the Republican who narrowly lost to Malloy in 2010, is widely expected to run again.

“I grew up in Connecticut at a time when it was one of the country’s most prosperous states. Now, thanks to the irresponsible policies of one-party rule, its economy ranks dead last,” Boucher said in a statement. “We have one of the heaviest tax burdens in the country, one of the worst environments for business, the nation’s highest per capita debt, dangerously unfunded pension liabilities, and the dubious distinction of being the worst state for retirement."

Currently in the state Senate, Boucher serves as a deputy minority leader. She is the Senate's Ranking Member of the General Assembly’s Transportation Committee Education Committee and Higher Education Committee. She also serves as a member of the General Assembly’s Finance, Revenue & Bonding Committee, where she is ranking member of the sub committee for Transportation Bonding.

Boucher currently represents Wilton and Redding and parts of Bethel, New Canaan, Ridgefield, Weston and Westport in the state Senate.

Before her election to the state Senate, she served six terms in the state House representing New Canaan, Norwalk and Wilton in the 143rd District. She also served on the State Board of Education and, for 10 years, in town government on Wilton’s Board of Selectmen and Board of Education.

“I love Connecticut, and I believe my background makes me uniquely qualified to turn our state around,” Boucher said in a statement. “I am committed to doing whatever I can to make sure that everyone who lives here can count on a future."
