The closing of the Black Goose in Darien in 2008 left a void in the area dining scene that's never been filled - until today. For a full decade, the pub-style eatery was the central tavern for the townspeople and an easy and pleasant stop for anyone passing through. The multi-room location offered plenty of space and the place was always buzzing.
Two years later, thanks to the determined and affable partnership between Michael Gagliardi of Darien and Michael Friedman, owner of Ash Creek Saloon in both Norwalk and Fairfield, The Goose, as it's now called, has come home. "We're delighted to give Darien back its hometown restaurant," said co-owner Michael Friedman just prior to a special ribbon cutting ceremony. The proud owner noted that it was Gagliardi's driving force that was the inspiration behind the resurrection of The Goose in its new form.
The big, sturdy bar remains but the place has been freshened and refurbished considerably. The booths are gone, replaced by solid wooden high top tables. The new furnishings and paint and the entire ambience manage to retain the English pub charm of the old place while updating to a style more befitting of 2010.
Similarly, the food straddles the style that customers remember and additional, more contemporary plates. The extensive offerings include inexpensive burgers and sandwiches, salads and pastas but also small plate options, grilled pizza, and entrees ranging from pork tenderloin and classic steak frites to scallops and bouillabaise, all priced from $16 to $26. A single menu will be served seven days a week for both lunch and dinner and a brunch menu will also be available on Sundays.
The Goose is located at 972 Post Road in Darien. Locals and area pub lovers hope it will be Darien's new golden egg.
