Harrison Ranked Country's 70th Best Place to Live

HARRISON, N.Y. - Dominick Fameli grew up in Harrison and now his own children are going through the local school system. When he learned his hometown ranked as one of the best places to live in the country, he said it was well deserved.

"Our downtown is a very tight community," Fameli said. "Everyone here knows each other. It's a great town to live in."

Harrison was named one of the top 100 small towns in America by CNN's Money Magazine this week with a ranking of 70. It was one of five New York communities to make the list and only one of two towns in Westchester County.

Nearby Mamaroneck also made the list at 60.

Other New York towns included Saratoga Springs at 75, Nanuet at 78, and Pearl River at 79.

"We know that 'It Is Great to Live in Harrison,' and now we have an independent corroboration," Mayor/Supervisor Joan Walsh said in a statement.

The study included a special mention of the Harrison Central School District, noting that it was one of the best in the country.

Fameli, a 1986 graduate of Harrison High School, sends his younger daughter Amanda to the same school and said he agreed with the recognition.

"It's a great school system," Fameli said.

Walsh said she was made aware of the list weeks ago when she received a phone call from the magazine.

"An editor had phoned me several weeks ago for details about Harrison, but would not commit if we would make the list or not," Walsh said.

Walsh said the questions were based on the quality of schools, housing and availability of jobs among other criteria. The availability of nightlife or proximity to the shore was not mentioned, she said.

As part of the article, readers are urged to vote for their favorite community. It is apparent many  people have already read the magazine and cast their votes.

Fameli joked that Westchester County deserved more recognition in the list.

"We pay the most taxes, so we should all be included," he said.
